To the editor:
Thank you for the excellent and informative series on "Win at All Costs".
No level of ordinary crime is as dangerous as a government out of control. The worst human rights abuses and genocide this century have been perpetrated by governments. Ordinary crime cannot remotely match the murderous governments of a Hitler, a Stalin or the various regimes in Africa and South America where untold millions of innocents have been slaughtered.
Unfortunately, the U.S. government has loosed the dogs of war on our citizens. Frankly, I see no light at the end of the tunnel. With a Congress hell-bent on the drug war, the rise of private prison companies and the need to fuel the exploding prison industry, I believe that the worst excesses of the government are still to come. Any day, I expect mere criticism of the drug war to be declared a crime, with the object of stifling dissent and providing more prisoners for the industry.
Our country has now more prisoners than either Russia or China. It is scary, and it is shameful. Who would have thought it could happen here?
