The Rally at the Wolvarena is a four-game event Saturday at Woodland Hills High School's stadium in Turtle Creek. Four WPIAL teams will play four out-of-state teams. But similar events are becoming popular around the country:
Texas Football Classic -- Five games involving Texas teams were played over three days (Aug. 26-28) at the Alamodome in San Antonio.
Kirk Herbstreit Classic -- This event now stretches over two days in two cities (Columbus, Ohio; and Dallas). At Ohio Stadium (home of the Ohio State Buckeyes) Sept. 5 and 6, four games will be played, involving six Ohio teams, one from Florida and one from Virginia. At Cowboys Stadium in Dallas Sept. 6, four games will be played, involving six Texas teams, one from Florida and one from Arkansas.
Gridiron Challenge: Florida vs. USA -- Daytona Beach, Fla., played host to this four-game event last Friday and Saturday. Four Florida teams played teams from Texas, Georgia and two from Mississippi.
Emerald City Kickoff Classic -- Qwest Field in Seattle, the home of the NFL's Seattle Seahawks, will be the site of this five-game event Saturday. The field includes nine teams from Washington and one from California.
City of Champions Classic -- This three-game event is Sunday in East St. Louis, Ill. Three Illinois teams will play two teams from Missouri and one from Florida.
Disney Kickoff Classic -- This three-game event is tonight at Disney's Wide World of Sports in Orlando, Fla. All three games match Central Florida teams against teams from Colorado. One of the participating teams is Englewood Cherry Creek, a perennial power in Colorado.
Texas vs. Florida High School Football Showcase -- Four teams from Florida will travel to DeSoto, Texas, to play four Texas teams Sept. 10-11. The best game is Cocoa, Fla., vs. Abilene, Texas.
Rally in Death Valley -- This Sept. 25 event is run by Ken Halloy, the same man who is running the Rally at the Wolvarena. The Rally in Death Valley is a three-game event in Steubenville, Ohio, with the feature game matching Cleveland St. Ignatius against Don Bosco Prep, a New Jersey team ranked No. 1 in the country in some polls last year.
