16 die in holiday weekend crashes; none wore seatbelts
Tuesday, June 01, 2010

Over the four-day Memorial Day weekend, 16 people were killed and 290 were injured in 776 crashes investigated by the Pennsylvania State Police.

These numbers only include crashes handled by state police, not crashes handled by local police.

None of those who died was wearing a seatbelt, which sends a "tragic message" about the importance of buckling up every time, State Police Commissioner Frank E. Pawlowski said in a news release.

Out of the 776 crashes, 70 were alcohol-related, including two of the fatal crashes.

Troopers cited 924 people for not wearing seat belts and 105 people for not securing children in safety seats.

Over Memorial Day weekend last year, nine people were killed and 309 were injured in the 712 crashes investigated by state police.
