The Dribbler: NCAA pool aside, Dribbler can still pick 'em
Friday, March 26, 2010

The Dribbler learned a good lesson this week: He needs to stick to what he knows.

He joined 30 NCAA bracket pools last week convinced his prognosticating skills would carry over from high school to college games.

He spent hours crunching numbers, studying bracketology, comparing RPI and consulting his wife, The Dribblette, to determine which team's color scheme best translates to March success.

He was convinced his Final Four was a lock -- what could beat a Kansas-Pitt-Wisconsin-Villanova Final Four?

The Dribbler looks foolish now.

That is the last time The Dribbler makes that mistake. From now on, he will only predict high school basketball games -- his forte.

His PIAA bracket is in good shape, though North Allegheny shocked him by beating Gateway. He was 8-4 last week (66.7 percent), which brings his season total to 167-82 (67.1 percent).

Here are The Dribbler's views on this weekend's PIAA championship games (played at the Bryce Jordan Center, University Park, Pa.):

Boys' games

Penn Wood vs. Plymouth Whitemarsh, 8 p.m. Saturday -- Penn Wood already beat Plymouth Whitemarsh in the District 1 title game. Winner: Penn Wood.

Neumann-Goretti vs. Chartiers Valley, 8 p.m. today -- The Colts are one of the state's elite teams, but they have not faced a nationally ranked opponent this season. Winner: Neumann-Goretti.

Strawberry Mansion vs. South Fayette, 2 p.m. Saturday -- The Lions have shown a lot of heart and determination in making an incredible run through the PIAA Class AA playoffs. But all good things must come to an end. Winner: Strawberry Mansion.

Reading Central Catholic vs Sewickley Academy, 2 p.m. today -- The Dribbler thinks Tom Droney will finish a great high school career with a PIAA gold medal. Winner: Sewickley Academy.

Girls' games

Archbishop Ryan vs. Mt. Lebanon, 6 p.m. today -- The Dribbler expects a blowout win for the mighty Blue Devils -- their second consecutive PIAA championship. Winner: Mt. Lebanon.

Archbishop Wood vs. Indiana, 6 p.m. Saturday -- The Little Indians have survived a couple close games in the tournament to advance to the title game. But Archbishop Wood won't let Indiana hang around long. Winner: Archbishop Wood.

Villa Maria Academy vs. York Catholic, noon today -- This matchup between the state's top two Class AA teams will be all chalk. Winner: Villa Maria Academy.

Northern Cambria vs. Bishop Guilfoyle, noon Saturday -- Norhern Cambria has five losses and Bishop Guilfoyle has zero. That is all The Dribbler needs to know about this Class A championship game. Winner: Bishop Guilfoyle.
