PIAA swimming: Oakland Catholic claims Class AA title
Sunday, March 21, 2010

The Oakland Catholic girls' team closed the book on its run in Class AA with a familiar chapter Saturday night at Bucknell University.

The Eagles capped a strong two-day performance by winning the PIAA Class AA team title. It is their eighth Class AA title since 2000 and will be their last in the classification for the foreseeable future. Oakland Catholic will move up to Class AAA next season.

The Eagles entered the day with a 14-point lead and slowly stretched the advantage to 30 by the end of the session.

They picked up 34 points with their second-place finish in the final event of the meet, the 400-yard freestyle relay. Freshman Leah Smith and her sister, senior Aileen Smith, joined juniors Allison Viverette and Megan Collins on the relay. Oakland Catholic finished with 187 points to Wyomissing's 157.

Apollo-Ridge junior Mackenzie Wargo took home a silver medal in the 100 breaststroke, finishing just ahead of Greensburg Salem junior Michelle Fischl.

In one of the more anticipated events of the championships, Ambridge senior Lindsay Vrooman defended her PIAA title in impressive fashion, beating two WPIAL freshmen in the 500 freestyle.

A day after winning a gold medal in the 200 freestyle, Vrooman finished her high school career with a PIAA-record time of 4:43.93 and beat Indiana's Rachel Zilinskas and Oakland Catholic's Leah Smith. The event was dominated by the WPIAL as all three WPIAL swimmers recorded national honor roll times and the WPIAL accounted for seven of the top nine places.

The 500 freestyle was also a strong event for the WPIAL boys. Shady Side Academy junior David Paulk finished second, edging out Highlands junior Conner Calarie. It was Paulk who beat out Calarie in the same event at the WPIAL championships.

Paulk's teammate, senior Frank Brown, placed fourth in the 100 freestyle, the event he won at WPIALs. Brown and Paulk combined with juniors Broderick Kelley and Peter Scott to place second in the 400 freestyle relay. That performance secured second place in the team standings for Shady Side Academy.

The Indians finished behind only a dominant Hershey team that spent the two-day meet breaking PIAA and national records. Hershey finished with 416 points. Shady Side had 152.
