Linesville State Fish Hatchery

• What to do: The hatchery was built in 1939 on 2,500 acres owned by the Pennsylvania Fish and Boat Commission. Water is pumped in from Pymatuning Reservoir and a series of wells. The hatchery includes a series of outdoor cement raceways and earthen ponds, indoor stainless steel and concrete raceways and egg incubators, and a visitor center with an aquarium and educational displays. Hatchery workers raise 13 warm-water species, from smallmouth bass to tiger muskies, and one cold-water fish -- its steelhead trout are rainbow trout that are planted in a Lake Erie tributary, migrate into the lake and return to the same creek several years later. About 80,000 visitors tour the site each year. Open daily 8 a.m.-3:30 p.m.
