The Penguins fell to the Carolina Hurricanes, 3-2, on an overtime goal by Jamie McBain today at Mellon Arena.
McBain's goal came with 0.9 seconds left in the overtime period.
Center Evgeni Malkin returned to the lineup after missing two games because of a foot injury.
Carolina opened the scoring with the only goal of the first period. Joni Pitkanen threw the puck toward the front of the net from the left corner. Zach Boychuk, who was coming down the slot unchecked, tipped the puck past Penguins goaltender Marc-Andre Fleury for a 1-0 lead at 6:48.
Hurricanes goaltender Manny Legace pulled himself out of the game at 7:32 of the second period, less than a minute after he was shaken up following a pileup in his crease that resulted in a goaltender interference penalty against the Penguins' Tyler Kennedy.
Justin Peters replaced Legace, who appeared to have an injury to his left leg.
The Penguins got the only goal of the second period, on a power play, to tie it, 1-1. Jordan Staal scored from the bottom of the right circle with 17.5 seconds left in the period off of a dish from Alexei Ponikarovsky, who had cruised down the slot.
Malkin broke the tie with a goal on a hard shot from just above the left dot at 13:05 of the third period.
Pitkanen restored the tie, 2-1, with a blast from the left circle at 16:00 of the third period.
The Penguins (42-24-6) play Monday night at Detroit.
