A coroner's jury says a man hanged in a Uniontown holding cell committed suicide and police should change some policies as a result.
Police say 43-year-old Michael Guthrie Sr., of Uniontown, was found hanged by his boot lace and sweat pants drawstring just minutes after he was last checked on by police Dec. 29. He had been in custody about three hours on charges that he punched his teenage daughter during an argument.
Trooper Timothy Kirsch says Mr. Guthrie showed no signs of distress, but his fiancee testified at a Fayette County coroner's inquest Thursday that he had been distraught over family and financial problems.
The jury says police should monitor holding cells with video cameras and have more than one officer in the station if someone is in custody.
