Brentwood sisters among eight alumni named to Hall of Fame

Eight more distinguished alumni -- including two sisters -- have been elected to the Brentwood High School Hall of Fame.

They are:

• The late George Bensen, class of 1963, a leader in the local business community and founder of Bensen Lincoln-Mercury. Mr. Bensen was an avid golfer and eight-time Club Champion at the South Hills Country Club.

• Robert Berger, Ph.D., class of 1958, spent his entire career teaching at Smith College, where he is currently the department chair and professor of geology. He has authored numerous text books and is an acclaimed expert on the green earth and the effects of global warming.

• Lt. Col. Robert Cronenweth, class of 1939, dedicated 30 years of service with the Pennsylvania 28th Infantry Division as a Battalion Commander serving in World War II and Korea. He also spent 34 years as an educator with the West Jefferson Hills School District as principal and superintendent.

• Vincent Graziano, class of 1968, is group vice president of Bradford Schools, where he implemented an expansion of the Pittsburgh-based company to nine other locations in the country. He is a past president of the Washington & Jefferson University Alumni Association and member of the board of trustees.

• June Kemmler Phillips, Ph.D, class of 1956, a teacher, scholar and author who was dean and professor at Weber State University, where she is a well-known foreign language educator.

• June Darling Stroup, class of 1957, has dedicated her life to the promotion of soccer in the United States as a coach and mentor. She was past president of the Pennsylvania West Soccer Association and was inducted into the U.S. Soccer Association Hall of Fame.

• Joanne Chiavetta, Ph.D, class of 1960, is director of EPI-State Research, a Canadian-based company dedicated to the research and program development of varied health-related issues. She has a noted record of accomplishment and research in the health care field, including that of director of Canadian Blood Services.

• The late Dorothy Chiavetta Kolodner, class of 1950, was an assistant professor at Carnegie Mellon University and chief of nutritional services of the Allegheny County Health Department. She was a pioneer in nutrition studies and the Founder of Women's, Infant's and Children's Supplemental Nutrition Program and past president of the Pennsylvania Association of WIC.

The Chiavettas are the first sisters to be inducted into the Hall of Fame.

Inductees will be honored at a banquet at the South Hills Country Club. Tickets are $35 and can be purchased from Kerry Huffman at 412-884-9209.

A Hall of Fame scholarship program was created in 2005 as an award for seniors planning primarily to study at the Community College of Allegheny County.
