The Upper St. Clair Elemenary and Middle School roller hockey teams last week presented 20-month-old Sergio Valaam, of Guatemala, and his caregiver, Cynthia Raftis of Mt. Lebanon, with a check for $1,100. The funds, raised by holding a raffle, will be used for Sergio's medical treatment here, which includes a cornea transplant, as well as foot braces.
Sergio arrived in the United States in January 2009 accompanied by Sisters from St. Rafael Orphanage in Guatemala City, Ms. Raftis said.
"My goal is to help him walk, develop strength in his muscles and become more verbal. If that can happen, I will be the happiest person in the world," she said.
Donations can be sent to: The Sergio Valaam Fund, Holy Cross Philoptochos, 123 Gilkeson Road, Pittsburgh, 15243.
