Dinner will Share the Harvest
Thursday, March 18, 2010

Looking for a non-foolish way to spend the evening of April 1?

Consider attending the first Share the Harvest dinner at Enrico Biscotti Co. in Highland Park. The bread and sweets baker is teaming with Just Harvest and the Pennsylvania Association for Sustainable Agriculture for a fundraising event designed to support CSA shares for two needy families during the 2010 growing season.

The $25-per-person meal -- a stand-up, serve-yourself event heavy on appetizers -- will feature sustainable, locally grown fare, with the proceeds going to provide two Pittsburgh families with fresh produce from the Kretschmann Organic Farm near Zelienople.

The families will work with community organizations to blog regularly and share their experiences throughout the season. The farm will match whatever is raised, providing one share for free.

Brochures and information about all local community-supported agriculture programs will be available at the event. More farms are offering flexible pricing options, such as work shares; contact the farms to discuss terms.

The dinner, prepared by the Enrico's team, will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. April 1 at 5904 Bryant St.; reserve tickets by calling Enrico Biscotti Co., 412-281-2602.

Way more than cupcakes

Dozen Bake Shop is hosting prix fixe dinners, focusing on local ingredients, at its Lawrenceville location. Saturday's menu features borscht with spiced creme fraiche, carrot custard, braised lentils, herb salad, butternut squash, chickpeas, collards, and apple tart with cinnamon cream. $35 per person; reservations via james@dozenbakeshop.com. It's BYOB.

Correction/Clarification: (Published Mar. 19, 2010) This story as originally published Mar. 18, 2010 about the April 1 Share the Harvest dinner at Enrico Biscotti incorrectly said it will be a sit-down, family-style meal. It was to be a stand-up, serve-yourself event heavy on appetizers.
