Police called to Carrick High School as precaution
Wednesday, March 17, 2010

City and school police were at Pittsburgh Carrick High School Tuesday afternoon as a precaution, officials said, after a student fight Monday triggered text-message rumors of a potential gunfight.

"There were unsubstantiated rumors that were generated today and our school police along with city police were at the school at the end of the day to make sure that nothing happens," said Pittsburgh Public Schools spokeswoman Ebony Pugh.

The rumors followed a fight involving eight students on Monday that lasted for about three minutes between third and fourth periods, school officials said. All eight students were removed from the building and face disciplinary action, Ms. Pugh said, which will include loss of privileges such as attending the prom and graduation ceremonies.

School was dismissed without incident on Tuesday, Ms. Pugh said.
