Q: I can't understand why Jamie Dixon refused to go full court pressure in the Notre Dame game. It might have forced the Irish to change the tempo and made them use extra seconds bringing the ball up the court. Finally you may get a turnover or two. I feel it's an option to use in these types of games.

FITTIPALDO: Jamie Dixon rarely employs a full-court press, so I don't think that is a viable option against teams that like to play slow and patient on offense. But one option is playing a zone like West Virginia did in the Big East semifinal game the next night. The Mountaineers used a 1-3-1 zone to pressure the Notre Dame guards. It got the Irish out of their offensive rhythm and made them play a little faster than they wanted. It also made them shoot earlier in the shot clock than they wanted because they got open for some 3-pointers. Dixon does not play a 1-3-1, but the Panthers have played a 2-3 zone in the past. It might be an option against teams that like to bleed the shot clock if only to change the pace of the game. Pitt players this week are talking about playing better offense in these slower-paced games as well. Jermaine Dixon said the Panthers have to "cherish" every possession. They got frustrated by the pace Notre Dame was playing. If the Panthers face a team in the NCAA tournament that likes to play that way I think they'll be better preapred on offense, which might help their defense.
