Two trains operated by a U.S. Steel subsidiary crashed this morning near the Edgar Thomson Plant, killing a railroad employee.
U.S. Steel spokeswoman Erin DiPietro confirmed the fatality and said no other injuries were reported. Diesel fuel leaking from a locomotive was being contained by an environmental contractor, she said.
The crash occurred shortly after 4 a.m. at a point where two rail lines converge on the south bank of Turtle Creek in North Versailles. Emergency personnel from North Versailles, East Pittsburgh, Allegheny County and the state police responded.
The medical examiner identified the victim as Andrew Monheim, 54, of Plum.
He was pronounced dead at the scene at 8:59 a.m. An autopsy is pending, the medical examiner said.
Rob Kulat, a spokesman for the Federal Railroad Administration in Washington, D.C., said the agency would investigate. Four staffers from the Pittsburgh area were at the scene.
Video recorders and black boxes have been recovered from the trains involved in the crash, he said. The investigation can take up to a year.
Union Railroad is part of Transtar Inc., a transportation subsidiary of U.S. Steel, Ms. DiPietro said.
Tracks where the accident occurred are currently closed, but alternate tracks are being used to maintain plant operations.
