Giant Eagle perches atop list yet again
Tuesday, March 16, 2010

"Food, glorious food!" sang the boys in "Oliver!" and also, it seems, residents of Pittsburgh as Giant Eagle kept the top spot as the largest private company in the region. The O'Hara-based retailer saw revenues rise by $200 million from 2008 to $8.2 billion.

The second-place finisher, Westinghouse Electric, posted another strong year with revenues of $4.2 billion, which is $1 billion more than the previous year.

Many companies posted lower revenues as local companies reacted with the rest of a country gripped by a nationwide recession that only now shows signs of abating.

Glassport-based Tube City IMS saw its revenue drop by more than half to $1.3 billion. The company, which provides services to steel makers and mills, posted a third-place revenue of $2.98 billion last year.

Also a top earner in the past, building supply company 84 Lumber posted revenues of $1.3 billion, down $800 million. It was still enough to fit near the top of the list, as it had last year, above Education Management and Gateway Health Plan.

The region's top car sellers, #1 Cochran and Day Automotive, saw drops of $23 million and $61.5 million, respectively.

But seeing sizable jumps were large firms such as K&L Gates and Hanna Holdings.

Missing from the year's list is Chromalox Inc., which posted revenues of $198 million in 2008, and Oxford Development, which saw $110 million in 2008. Neither provided results in time for this year's rankings.

Two companies from last year's list, Pittsburgh Glass Works and Development Dimensions International, declined to provide 2009 revenues.

Even after a season that ended prematurely for fans, the Pittsburgh Steelers' estimated revenue of $235 million was a nearly 10 percent increase from the previous year.

And joining the list are the Pittsburgh Penguins, who added an estimated $6 million to their revenue in 2009 after another Stanley Cup victory.
