The Dribbler: Coming up big in the finals
Friday, March 12, 2010
The Dribbler and The Fumbler like to keep their family disputes private -- kind of like Ben Roethlisberger's social life.

Arguments between The Dribbler and his cousin are confined to family gatherings during holidays such as Thanksgiving, Christmas and Selection Sunday.

The 'ler family is not keen on airing dirty laundry (after all, it has been months since The Fumbler did his).

But The Dribbler cannot hold back any longer. He absolutely crushed his fumbling cousin with WPIAL championship picks.

The Fumbler was 0-4 in November in picking WPIAL football championships. The Dribbler was 5-3 this past weekend at the WPIAL basketball finals.

Stellar? Not quite. But it isn't about outrunning the bear; The Dribbler just has to outrun his dim-witted cousin.

So who cares if The Fumbler had a season winning percentage better than 80 percent, even if The Dribbler is now 137-67 (67.2 percent)? The Fumbler is like Peyton Manning -- great in the regular season, but he struggles in the big game.

Here are The Dribbler's views on this week's first-round PIAA playoff games:

Top boys' games

Allderdice vs. Gateway, 4:30 p.m. Saturday, Peabody High School. -- The Dribbler has a lot of enemies in Monroeville. It's a good thing no one knows what he looks like, or else he could never show his face there again. The Dribbler is tempted to pick the Dragons, considering Gateway lost to Oliver earlier this year. But he won't. Winner: Gateway.

Serra Catholic vs. Southern Fulton, 8 p.m. today, Pitt-Johnstown -- The Eagles have a tough tournament draw, playing in the first round against District 5 champion Southern Fulton. But Serra played well against Lincoln Park in the WPIAL semifinals and should be hungry for a win. Winner: Serra Catholic.

Other top boys' games

TODAY -- Oliver over West Mifflin; Chartiers Valley over Erie Central Tech; Bradford over Trinity; West Allegheny over Hickory; Hampton over Huntingdon; Sewickley Academy over Coudersport; Tussey Mountain over Cornell; Lincoln Park over Penns Manor; DuBois Central Catholic over Neshannock.

SATURDAY -- Mt. Lebanon over McKeesport; North Catholic over Westmont Hilltop; South Fayette over Cambria Heights; Washington over Brookville; Penns Valley over Beaver Falls; Rochester over Eisenhower; North Star over Greensburg Central Catholic.

Top girls' games

Allderdice vs. Baldwin, 6 p.m. today, Brashear High School -- Belma Nurkic was held in check in the WPIAL Class AAAA championship against Mt. Lebanon. But Baldwin did not look out of its league against the mighty Blue Devils. Baldwin was within three points of Mt. Lebanon in the second quarter and never stopped fighting. The Dribbler expects that same fight in the PIAA tournament. Winner: Baldwin.

Other top girls' games

TODAY -- Mt. Lebanon over Fox Chapel; Bethel Park over Strong Vincent; Peters Township over State College; Jeannette over Cambria Heights; Avonworth over Greenville; Southern Huntingdon over Beaver; Cranberry over South Fayette; Greensburg Central Catholic over Marion Center; Seton-LaSalle over North East; North Star over Sto-Rox.

SATURDAY -- New Castle over Mercyhurst Prep; Indiana over Sharon; Chartiers Valley over Perry; Saint Marys over Hampton; Hopewell over Bellefonte; Vincentian Academy over Otto-Eldred; Quigley over Shade; Tussey Mountain over Monessen; North Catholic over Conemaugh Valley; Elk County Catholic over Rochester.
