The Dribbler cannot think of a worse way to spend a weekend than at an Oscars party.
Have you ever watched the Oscars? The Dribbler would rather stick his hand in a fire ant colony. Or watch a Pirates game.
The Oscars ignore some of the most important categories such as best sports movie (Invictus) and best performance by a sports figure or athlete (Lou Holtz, The Blind Side).
Why not have a WPIAL championship party? Just invite all your friends to the Palumbo Center tonight and Saturday. Tell them they can meet The Dribbler in person (he will be the one with a notebook sitting at that court-side table).
The Dribbler was a stellar 15-5 last week (75 percent), bringing his season record to 132-64 (67.3 percent). But he is disappointed he won't be able to predict the City League games, since the semifinals are past his deadline.
Here are The Dribbler's views on this week's WPIAL championship games (all played at the Palumbo Center):
Mt. Lebanon vs. Gateway, 9 p.m. Saturday-- The Dribbler has been especially tough on the Gators recently, and they have proven him wrong. If he picks Gateway in the title game, does that mean the Gators will lose? Guess we'll never know. Winner: Mt. Lebanon.
Chartiers Valley vs. Hampton, 9 p.m. today -- When these two squads played at the end of the regular season, there was little question who was the better team. The Colts crushed the Talbots, 87-68. Hard to pick against Chartiers Valley, especially with T.J. McConnell playing so well in the postseason. Winner: Chartiers Valley.
North Catholic vs. Rochester, 1 p.m. Saturday -- The Dribbler thought the Rams were better than the No. 7 seed. But he did not imagine they would appear in the WPIAL title game. The Dribbler thinks Rochester's luck runs out and the Trojans make it two titles in a row. Winner: North Catholic.
Sewickley Academy vs. Lincoln Park, 7 p.m. today -- The Dribbler believes that when Lincoln Park is playing well, the Leopards are tough to beat. Lincoln Park might be the most athletic team in Class A. But the Leopards are prone to sloppy play, poor shot selection and turnovers. The Panthers, meanwhile, have been here before. The Dribbler expects a big night from Tom Droney. Winner: Sewickley Academy.
Mt. Lebanon vs. Baldwin, 7 p.m. Saturday -- Sports pundits are prone to say this during the postseason: "It's tough to beat a team three times in the same season." They must have never seen the Mt. Lebanon girls' team play. Winner: Mt. Lebanon.
Hopewell vs. New Castle, 3 p.m. Saturday -- The Vikings won their first game against the Red Hurricane this season by one point and the second by two. The Dribbler predicts a three-point victory for Hopewell. Winner: Hopewell.
Seton-LaSalle vs. Jeannette, 11 a.m. Saturday -- The five-loss Rebels are hardly a surprise team in the WPIAL title game. Three of their five losses came against WPIAL semifinalists from higher classes. The Jayhawks might have a better record and a better seed, but Seton-LaSalle is the better team. Winner: Seton-LaSalle.
North Catholic vs. Vincentian Academy, 5 p.m. today -- The Trojanettes have the most storied tradition in WPIAL girls' basketball. Vincentian has clawed its way into the WPIAL title game by knocking off the No. 3 and No. 2 seeds in consecutive games. The Dribbler expects North Catholic to sweep the boys' and girls' titles for the second consecutive year. Winner: North Catholic.
