Q: Back on February 5th, you wrote, "As for the point guard situation, it looks like the coaching staff made a recruiting mistake with Woodall." Do you still have that same opinion after Woodall's very solid second half and OT against WVU?
Dan Lewis, Newport News, Va.
FITTIPALDO: Woodall played a tremendous game against West Virginia. He had 12 points, seven rebounds, six assists and no turnovers in 31 minutes. It was his best game at Pitt. But let's examine some of his statistics from previous games as well. Against Seton Hall eight days ago, he had two points, two assists and two turnovers in 10 minutes. In the first game against West Virginia in Morgantown, he had two points, one assist and one turnover. At South Florida, he had zero points and one turnover in 19 minutes. I can go on and on. It's not a secret that Woodall has struggled since Jermaine Dixon returned to the lineup and he was relegated to being a reserve. Woodall was quite candid in the postgame news conference about losing his confidence. To answer your question, I still believe Woodall was a mistake. This is his second year in the program and he has not shown that he can be this team's point guard of the future. That's why he was recruited. It's going to take more than one game for me to change my opinion on the subject. But even if Woodall is a recruiting mistake it does not mean he can't or won't make some contributions. If his role is as a reserve for the rest of his career and he performs well then he will serve a purpose.
