Saturday, November 21, 2009

EAST LANSING, Mich. --- No. 13 Penn State kept alive its hopes for a BCS berth today by finishing off Michigan State with a big second half.

The slow-starting Nittany Lions (10-2, 6-2 Big Ten) erupted for five touchdowns in the final 30 minutes en route to a 42-14 victory over the Spartans (6-6, 4-4) in their regular-season finale.

Quarterback Daryll Clark had a record-setting day for the Lions in front of 73,771 fans at Spartan Stadium.

He tied his career high with four touchdown passes, giving him 23 for the season -- a new single-season record. Todd Blackledge threw 22 in 1982 during the team's first national championship season.

Clark tossed touchdown passes of 32 and 27 yards to wide receiver Graham Zug, a 29-yarder to Quarless and a 30-yarder to fullback Joe Suhey.

Quarless also caught a 14-yard touchdown pass from wide receiver Curtis Drake on a trick play. Backup quarterback Kevin Newsome scored on a 1-yard run with 2:53 remaining.

Quarterback Kirk Cousins had an 11-yard touchdown pass to tight end Charlie Gantt and backup quarterback Keith Nichol tossed a 71-yarder to Keshawn Martin with 1:44 left.
