WPIAL Class AA: Centurions hang on to beat Golden Eagles
Saturday, November 21, 2009

David Miller turned in his usual 200-yard effort, but it was Trent Hurley and Evan Marshall who stole the spotlight in Greensburg Central Catholic's 24-19 win against Keystone Oaks in the WPIAL Class AA semifinals last night at Elizabeth Forward High School.

The victory earned Greensburg Central (10-2) its third title shot in five years. The Centurions, seeded No. 11 in the 16-team bracket, will face defending champion Aliquippa (11-1) in the title game Friday at Heinz Field. Aliquippa, the No. 9 seed, earned its berth with a 17-10 win against Beaver Falls.

"Aliquippa knocked us out of the playoffs last year," said Greensburg Central coach Muzzy Colosimo, referring to a 32-14 loss in the quarterfinals. "Hopefully, we can return the favor this year."

Keystone Oaks opened the scoring with a four-play, 73-yard touchdown drive on its first possession. Jordan Maddox capped the drive with a 20-yard run. The key play was a 29-yard pass from Matt Buckley to Lee Shearn.

Greensburg Central scored its first points with 10:06 left in the second quarter on a 26-yard field goal by Brian Gongaware. The Centurions drove 71 yards on 10 plays, with the key play coming on a 23-yard pass from Hurley to Miller.

Keystone Oaks cut the deficit to 17-13 with a 10-play, 70-yard drive that ended with an 8-yard run by Matt McCann with 0:18 left in the third quarter.

Greensburg Central increased its lead to 24-13 with a 34-yard run by Miller with 5:42 left in the fourth quarter. Miller, who rushed for 211 yards on 27 carries, carried all five times during the 68-yard drive.

Keystone Oaks scored its final touchdown with 3:19 left on a 26-yard pass from Barkley to Shearn. The Golden Eagles tried an onside kick, but Greensburg Central recovered and ran out the clock.

Maddox was held to 105 yards on 20 carries. McCann had 50 yards on 11 carries, but did not carry the ball in the first half.
