City League champion Schenley (10-1) routed Punxsutawney, 54-0, last night at DuBois in the first round of the PIAA Class AAA playoffs.
It is the first state-playoff victory by a City League team since Oliver topped Hollidaysburg, 20-19, in 2006.
Schenley scored five rushing touchdowns as well as touchdowns via a punt return, an interception return and a fumble return.
Jerome Matthews led the Spartans with 166 yards rushing and three touchdowns.
Schenley outgained the Chucks, 299-74. The Spartans forced Punxsutawney (9-3) into four turnovers, including three interceptions, and advanced to the second round against District 10 champion Erie Cathedral Prep, a 47-21 winner against Grove City.
After a three-week layoff, the Bulldogs (3-7) fell to Bedford (5-6) last night at Cupples Stadium in the first round of the PIAA Class AA playoffs.
Paul Detwiler led Bedford with 112 yards rushing and three touchdowns. Detwiler scored on runs of 7 and 17 yards. He also returned a kickoff 76 yards for a touchdown.
Westinghouse was led by Ron Tyler who rushed for 111 yards. Tyler scored the Bulldogs' only touchdown on a 56-yard run in the second quarter. Bedford led, 14-6, at halftime.
Westinghouse outrushed Bedford, 209 to 162 yards. The Bulldogs turned the ball over five times, losing three fumbles. Bedford also held a punting edge, averaging 47.5 yards per attempt to 25 for Westinghouse.
