District Fishing Report
Lake Erie: Steelhead tributaries were still rain-starved yesterday. A south wind made for good shoreline fishing the past two days, but a west wind forecast for today could put the kibosh on that. William Myers Jr. of Elizabethtown landed a 13-pound, 5??-ounce, 31??-inch steelhead on sucker spawn. Bobby Newman caught a 10-pound, 2-ounce, 29??-inch steelhead on a minnow on Walnut Creek. Ron Palvo of Greenville landed a 7-pound, 27??-inch steelhead on a fly in the Walnut Creek basin.
Allegheny Reservoir (Warren County): The tail waters were yielding white bass, walleyes and trout.
Allegheny River (Venango County): An 11-pound and a 14-pound walleye were reported from the Franklin/Oil City area. Those who knew where to drop their bait were catching limits of 15- to 20-inch walleyes, with locally-trapped minnows, chubs and shiners out-performing jigs.
Pymatuning Reservoir (Crawford County): Crappies, 12 to 15 inches, were hitting around docks and deeper brush piles. Walleyes in mixed sizes up to 28 inches were reported. A couple of waders were targeting points and weeds in the evenings when walleyes feed on shad. Boaters were catching perch in mixed sizes on minnows; the northern islands were productive.
Conneaut Lake (Crawford County): White bass were hitting in recent weeks.
Lake Wilhelm (Mercer County): Crappies, including some slabs, average-size bluegills and largemouth bass were reported in recent days.
Lake Arthur (Butler County): A surprising number of perch, 6 to 12 inches, were reported in shallow water. Anglers were targeting them with fathead minnows. A few largemouth bass and walleyes also were reported.
Allegheny River: Walleyes were reported, but most were running small. A few smallmouth bass also were reported.
Ohio River: Russ Greshauk of McKees Rocks caught a 28??-inch, 7-pound walleye with 7-inch girth on a Mister Twister jig near Neville Island.
Monongahela River: Walleyes and saugers were reported below the dams.
Twin Lakes (Westmoreland County): Anglers were still catching stocked trout on artificial scented baits.
Greenlick Lake (Fayette County): The Pennsylvania Fish and Boat Commission has begun drawing down this 101-acre impoundment (also known as Jacobs Creek Reservoir) off Route 982 by 5 feet so it can place habitat enhancement devices this winter.
Youghiogheny River: Trout were reported from the outflow to Ohiopyle.
Youghiogheny Reservoir (Fayette County): Anglers were catching walleyes on jigging spoons.
Spring Creek (Centre County): Good fall water levels were reported along with a few tan and green caddisflies, midges, Blue-Winged Olives (sizes 20, 22) and craneflies. Nymphing with small flies and throwing small streamers have been more productive than dry-fly fishing. Anglers are urged to avoid walking on gravelly spawning beds.
Little Juniata River (Blair County): Low but fishable water levels were reported. Tiny BWOs (22-24) are on the water. Tan caddis, October Caddis, and a few Slate Drakes were hatching. Avoid gravelly spawning beds.
Raystown Lake (Huntingdon County): Lake trout were reported in 30-35 feet by anglers down-rigging small spoons. Sizes averaged 3-4 pounds, with some 10-pounders reported. The striped bass bite was erratic with success coming at 18-20 feet on umbrella rigs or diving crankbaits (Big Macs) trolled at 2?? mph.
Pine Creek, Little Pine Creek (Lycoming County): Very good conditions were reported yesterday, and anglers were catching trout on attractor patterns, such as Hare's Ear and Pheasant Tail nymphs, streamers and Wooly Buggers.
