The first bake sale that Rennerdale United Presbyterian Church held to raise money for its building project was so popular, it raised $900 and the homemade goods sold out within hours.
Three years later, the congregation of the Collier church has amassed enough money to begin its long-awaited building expansion.
Ground was broken Nov. 1 for the Wade White Christian Education Center, named after a devoted church member.
The center will consist of a youth room, classrooms, a foyer and restrooms, all aimed at strengthening the church's mission to serve all faiths in the community.
Architect Tom Chidlow, of the Rennerdale section of the township, designed the new wing for free. He estimated the addition's cost at $250,000 to $300,000.
Besides his service contribution, other Collier residents are providing construction services at free or reduced prices. Among them are excavator Dan Fotovich, Ralph Shipley of Gerard Plumbing, Doug Cromer of Cromer Electric, framing contractor Bob Sloss, Randy Kania of Pella Windows. Superior Walls and Testa Concrete also are contributing. Jim Minahan is construction coordinator.
Additional money will be needed to complete the project, which is expected to be done by next summer.
