Dominated by its playoff rival the past two seasons, the Springdale girls' soccer team turned the tables last night.
The WPIAL champion Dynamos scored the first two goals of the game and held on to defeat two-time defending PIAA finalist South Park, 2-1, in a PIAA Class AA semifinal at Chartiers Valley.
The Eagles (20-3-2) beat the Dynamos (21-1-2) in both the WPIAL final and PIAA semifinals the past two seasons before Springdale upended them in the WPIAL final this season by the same 2-1 score.
Last night, Alexa Sarsfield scored her 16th goal of the season eight minutes into the second half, and teammate Ally Overly headed in Brittany Loveland's corner kick seven minutes later to give the Dynamos a two-goal lead.
South Park's Cassie Raymond tallied her 24th goal of the season with just over six minutes left to play, but South Park's comeback fell short.
"This game was similar to the [WPIAL] championship game. We stuck with the same game plan," said Springdale coach Jerry Concannon.
Springdale, which owns a 10-game unbeaten streak, will face District 4 third-place finisher Loyalsock (20-4-1) in Saturday's final.
Erie McDowell 1, Norwin 0: Michelle Holcombe scored her second winning goal in as many games to push District 10 champion Erie McDowell (21-3) to an overtime victory against the Knights (18-5-1) at Neshannock. It was a tough homecoming, of sorts, for Norwin coach Danielle Baginski, who previously coached McDowell and still teaches there.
Hampton 2, Palmyra 1: Zach Carter's two goals lifted the WPIAL runner-up Talbots (19-4) to an upset win against Palmyra (25-2) at Hollidaysburg. Hampton advances to play District 1 champion Octorara (18-4-1). Carter scored off a cross from Chris Hunkele 10 minutes into the game. After Palmyra got the tying goal midway through the second half, Carter slid and knocked in the winner with five minutes remaining.
"Palmyra went after us in the second half," said Hampton coach Chuck Kelley, "but their goal calmed us down. We started to put passes together after that."
Seton-LaSalle 2, Greensburg Central Catholic 1: The Rebels (18-7) earned a chance to capture their second title in a row after Ty Trainor scored with just over 10 minutes left in the second overtime to give them the win against the WPIAL champion Centurions (20-5) at Chartiers Valley. James DelGreco also scored for the Rebels, who had fallen behind, 1-0, just before the half. Next up for Seton-LaSalle is District 1 champion Christopher Dock (19-3-1).
