Three PNC Plaza penthouse sold
Tuesday, November 17, 2009

The $3 million penthouse condominium atop Three PNC Plaza is gone, but it was no Gotham City superhero, "just a regular Pittsburgher," who swooped in to buy it.

Helen Hanna Casey, president of Howard Hanna Real Estate Services, confirmed yesterday that the 5,600-square-foot, 23rd floor condo in the new Downtown building had been sold, with a closing scheduled for early next year.

The L-shaped condo, with an asking price of $3 million, spans the entire west side of the Three PNC Plaza, with views of PNC Park, Market Square and the intricate architecture atop many Downtown buildings.

Ms. Casey would not disclose the price, but she did refute speculation that actor Michael Keaton, a Pittsburgh native who starred as Batman, purchased the condo.

Ms. Casey described the buyer, whom she would not name, as "a regular Pittsburgher." She declined to provide further information. The buyer will become public once the deal closes and the real estate transaction has been completed.

The penthouse is one of 27 one- to three-bedroom condos, ranging in price from $514,500 to $3 million, being sold at Three PNC Plaza on the 14th to 23rd floors. So far seven have been sold, Ms. Casey said.

She expects the pace to pick up in January, when the lobby has been completed and "we can really show the building as a building."

While the condo market overall has been slow, Ms. Casey said activity has been picking up over the past six weeks as housing sales and prices have increased. She also said low interest rates along with the availability of tax credits have helped to stimulate demand.

Whether that's enough to attract the odd superhero remains to be seen. "If Batman wants to come, we'd love to have him, and I'm sure we can accommodate all of his needs," she said. After all, there is an underground parking garage.
