UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. -- Penn State sophomore running back Brandon Beachum will miss the rest of the season.
He tore the anterior cruciate ligament in his right knee on the kickoff return to start the second half in the Nittany Lions' 31-20 victory over Indiana Saturday at Beaver Stadium.
Dr. Wayne Sebastianelli said today that Beachum will have surgery within the next two weeks and his rehabilitation will take a minimum of nine months.
Beachum, 6 feet and 218 pounds, has played in every game this season on offense and special teams. He began the year at fullback, but moved to tailback when backup Stephfon Green re-injured his ankle against Minnesota.
Beachum was fourth on the team in rushing with 113 yards on 24 carries -- a 4.7-yard average -- and a touchdown. He also had three receptions for 29 yards.
He was one of three true freshmen to play in every game in 2008 and has a redshirt year available next season should he need it.
