Killer of Carrick student dies
Sunday, November 15, 2009

Howard "Duck" Kelley, who was serving a life sentence in the 2005 slaying of a 16-year-old Carrick High School student, has died.

Mr. Kelley, 25, who was lodged at State Correctional Institution Dallas in Luzerne County, was hospitalized after falling ill on Friday and died at 3:05 the following morning, Coroner John Corcoran said.

An autopsy was done today but the cause and manner of death had not been determined pending analysis of test results, Mr. Corcoran said. There were no obvious indications of foul play, he said. State police were investigating.

Mr. Kelley was one of three men convicted in the March 2005 slaying of Keith Watts, a Carrick sophomore, who was shot to death as he sat in a vehicle parked outside the high school.

Mr. Kelley and three others were convicted in the August 2007 beating of an inmate at the Allegheny County Jail.
