Trojans use trick plays to defeat No. 12 Dynamos
Saturday, November 14, 2009

North Catholic wide receiver Matt Fedzen made the most of his throwing opportunities, connecting on two option touchdown passes to lead the No. 4 Trojans past the No. 12 Dynamos, 24-13, in the Class A quarterfinals last night at Deer Lakes High School.

The Trojans trailed in the second quarter, 10-7, when Fedzen hooked up with Jesse Long on a 69-yard toss, giving the Trojans (9-2) an eventual 14-10 halftime lead.

In the fourth quarter, Fedzen struck again, hitting Julian Durden for 28 yards for a 21-13 advantage.

Springdale (8-3), the lowest-ranked remaining seed in the Class A bracket, outgained North Catholic, 370 yards to 276, including 266 yards on the ground.

But the Dynamos fumbled five times, with North Catholic recovering on three occasions.

Dynamos quarterback Brian Shemanski, who ran for a game-high 98 yards on 10 carries, had a tough time when he went to the air. He completed 7 of 9 attempts for 94 yards, but he was intercepted twice.

When he wasn't throwing, Fedzen was busy receiving, pulling down four passes from quarterback Martin Long for 45 yards.

Durden also rushed for 80 yards on nine carries

Matt Weber kicked a pair of field goals for Springdale from 25 and 22 yards.

Laurel wide receiver Jake Dando added to the drubbing, catching three passes for 101 yards and two touchdowns.

The victory propelled Laurel (10-1) to the WPIAL semifinals for the first time since 1996.

Deshan Brown pulled Beth-Center (8-3) within 14-7 following a 70-yard pass from quarterback Sal Faieta, but that would be it for the Bulldogs, who were trying to make the semifinals for just the third time in 24 seasons.

Rochester 38, Brentwood 12

Trey Johnson rushed for 185 yards on 19 carries and scored three touchdowns to pace the No. 1 seeded Rams to a decisive victory last night against the No. 9 Spartans at Montour High School.

The win punched Rochester's ticket to the Class A semifinals for the ninth time in the past 10 seasons as the Rams seek their first WPIAL title since 2004.

Brentwood quarterback Cory Bauer was harassed by Rochester all night, throwing four interceptions.

Clairton 24, Avonworth 0

The No. 3 seed Bears used their familiar dominating defense to defeat the No. 6 Antelopes at Chartiers-Houston High School last night.

Clairton (10-1) held Avonworth in check, as Carvan Thompson sacked the Antelopes quarterback Tom Turnbull in the end zone in the first half to highlight the Bears' sixth shutout this season.

Clairton also intercepted Turnbull four times.

Deontae Howard continued his success on the ground this season, rushing 16 times for 203 yards and two touchdowns. On the year, he has rolled through opposing defenses for 1,659 yards.
