For three quarters, South Fayette showed it couldn't care less about Aliquippa's "mystique," worrying itself more about continuing its terrific season by upending the reigning champions.
But in a nine-minute span in the fourth quarter, that mood took a dramatic turn for the worse.
And as Aliquippa proved, it takes four quarters to knock the champs from their throne.
Aliquippa surged for five fourth-quarter touchdowns and came from behind to stun top-seed South Fayette, 47-34, in a wild WPIAL Class AA quarterfinal game last night at Chartiers Valley.
The Quips (10-1) will next meet Midwestern Conference rival Beaver Falls in the semifinals. The Tigers handed the Quips their only loss in September.
Aliquippa can hope it can play half as good as it did in the fourth quarter last night.
The Quips trailed, 27-15, before storming back with 32 fourth-quarter points. To put that into perspective, the Quips exceeded that total in a full game only three times this season.
Quarterback Rasheem Jones provided the Quips a lot of spark with his feet and strong arm, and converted the winning touchdown on a 1-yard sneak with 24 seconds left to erase a one-point deficit and give Aliquippa a 41-34 lead.
"I told coach to give it to me and I'll put the game away," Jones said afterwards.
Rashad Kenney provided the exclamation point, returning an interception for a touchdown in the closing seconds.
Before Jones' run, the Golden Lions (10-1) had taken the lead on Christian Brumbaugh's 8-yard scoring pass to Jeff Gardner with 2:08 left.
Brumbaugh finished 17 of 30 passing for 328 yards and three touchdowns.
