The Fumbler: Questions, questions, questions
Friday, November 13, 2009

The Fumbler was wondering: Why do high school football coaches have postgame talks with their teams right on the field? When did that start? Didn't they always go to the locker room years ago to talk with their players?

And, The Fumbler wonders, why does the WPIAL stage first-round playoff games at home sites of teams that finish first or second in their conference, but in basketball and baseball all playoff games are at neutral sites?

These are just a few of the things that intrigue The Fumbler. He wonders about a lot of things these days, especially his postseason picks. He wonders how he had a winning percentage close to .830 in the regular season, but was only 24-9 (.727 percentage) in the first weekend of the postseason? His season record is 503-110 (.821 percentage).

But enough of the wondering. Here are his thoughts on all of tonight's playoff games -- WPIAL quarterfinals and City League championship. All WPIAL games begin at 7:30 p.m.

City League

Oliver (8-1) vs. Schenley (8-1) at Cupples Stadium, 7 p.m. -- Schenley won the first meeting, 6-0. This one likely will be low-scoring, too, and again will be a Schenley victory. The Spartans will get their third City League title in six decades. Winner: Schenley.

WPIAL Class AAAA

Gateway (10-0) vs. Penn Hills (5-5) at Norwin -- Someone at Gateway better figure out a way to block Penn Hills defensive lineman Aaron Donald, or the Gators might have some problems. More importantly, though, Penn Hills better figure out a way to get its offense going. Winner: Gateway.

North Allegheny (9-1) vs. North Hills (5-5) at Pine-Richland -- The Fumbler says North Hills' victory against McKeesport was the biggest first-round upset in any class. The Indians did it because they played well defensively, did not turn the ball over and had only one penalty. It will take another effort like that to beat North Allegheny. The Fumbler says no way. Winner: North Allegheny.

Woodland Hills (9-1) vs. Central Catholic (8-2) at West Mifflin -- The Fumbler will be attending this game, and, if you would like to meet him, it is a good bet you could catch him eating his pregame dinner at Jim's hot dog shop in West Mifflin. He loves Jim's Secret Sauce. As for the game, Woodland Hills crushed Central Catholic, 27-3, earlier this season, and The Fumbler has trouble seeing Central Catholic doing much against Woodland Hills' defense. Central Catholic's only chance is for its offensive line to have its best game of the season and establish a running game. Winner: Woodland Hills.

Bethel Park (9-1) vs. Shaler (9-1) at Baldwin -- Bethel Park's offense seems to be on a roll, scoring 38 or more points in four consecutive games. Shaler needs a big game from its quarterback Tyler Bills if the Titans have any hope of making it to the semifinals for the first time. Winner: Bethel Park.

WPIAL Class AAA

Thomas Jefferson (10-0) vs. Franklin Regional (8-2) at Elizabeth Forward -- Do not be surprised if Franklin Regional keeps this one fairly close. But it will be a big surprise if Franklin Regional wins. Winner: Thomas Jefferson.

West Allegheny (8-2) vs. New Castle (8-2) at North Allegheny -- The Fumbler thinks this is the best matchup in the AAA quarterfinals. There will be offensive standouts all over the turf. That means the key to the game will be defense -- and The Fumbler believes New Castle has too many defensive holes. Winner: West Allegheny.

Hopewell (10-0) vs. Mars (7-3) at Ambridge -- Hopewell standout running back Rushel Shell is back after serving a one-game suspension for breaking a school rule. The other key player in this game is Mars running back Austin Miele, who has been nursing a sore hamstring. Without a big game from Miele, The Fumbler does not see Mars having much of a chance. Winner: Hopewell.

Hampton (6-4) vs. Uniontown (7-3) at Yough -- This statement is hard to believe: Either Hampton or Uniontown will be in the semifinals. What's next, elephants flying? Winner: Hampton.

WPIAL Class AA

South Fayette (10-0) vs. Aliquippa (9-1) at Chartiers Valley -- Can Aliquippa slow down South Fayette's spread offense? That's the main question. The Fumbler believes the Quips might be good enough in the secondary to cover the Lions. Winner: Aliquippa.

Beaver Falls (8-2) vs. Sto-Rox (8-2) at Seneca Valley -- This game will be played at Seneca Valley's NexTier Stadium. The Fumbler tried to get his name on Southmoreland's stadium a few years ago and name it Fumbler Field. But when athletic director Dennis Zieger wanted a $75 naming rights fee and dinner at Bob Evans, The Fumbler said enough is enough. Speaking of naming rights, The Fumbler named Beaver Falls as the WPIAL champ at the start of the playoffs. Winner: Beaver Falls.

Mount Pleasant (10-0) vs. Keystone Oaks (9-1) at Penn-Trafford -- OK, it's time for an upset special. But would a Keystone Oaks victory really be that big of an upset? Not in The Fumbler's eyes. Winner: Keystone Oaks.

Center (9-1) vs. Greensburg Central Catholic (8-2) at Fox Chapel -- Yes, Greensburg Central Catholic has two losses. But, remember, Greensburg Central was ranked No. 1 in the state at the start of the season. The Centurions are good, but so is Center. This one is a toss-up. Winner: Greensburg Central Catholic.

WPIAL Class A

Rochester (10-0) vs. Brentwood (6-4) at Montour -- Brentwood has been hot, winning six games in a row. But the weather is starting to cool, isn't it? Rochester's defense is too good. Winner: Rochester.

North Catholic (8-2) vs. Springdale (8-2) at Deer Lakes -- It is nice that Deer Lakes gets to see a playoff game because the Lancers have never played in one. North Catholic enters with an eight-game winning streak, including a 20-14 victory against Springdale. This one will be close, too. Winner: North Catholic.

Laurel (9-1) vs. Beth-Center (8-2) at Beaver -- Beth-Center is good enough to play with Laurel. Just not good enough to win. The Fumbler sees a semifinal game between Laurel and Clairton, teams that met in the season opener. Winner: Laurel.

Clairton (9-1) vs. Avonworth (8-2) at Chartiers-Houston -- Clairton has scored 45 points or more in nine consecutive games. The Bears will not get that many this time, but they will get their 10th win in a row. Winner: Clairton.
