A judge today doubled the bond for a man, recently acquitted of killing a 12-year-old Wilkinsburg boy, who now faces new gun charges.
Allegheny County prosecutor Mark Tranquilli asked Judge Randal B. Todd for a $200,000 bond for Donald "Tank" Wilson, 21, of Homewood. Mr. Wilson had been held on $75,000 bond, for which he would have had to pay a percentage to gain his freedom pending trial.
Mr. Tranquilli cited Mr. Wilson's juvenile record for indecent assault, weapons violations and robbery.
Judge Todd instead doubled the bond to $150,000 but also made it straight, meaning the defendant will have to produce the entire amount.
The request triggered objections from attorney Paul Gettleman, who successfully represented Mr. Wilson in the homicide trial.
He said the bond reflected the homicide case rather that the charges currently against his client, and he said it was unreasonable for a man who is living with his mother.
Police said Mr. Wilson escaped during a traffic stop last month after a woman said he threatened her with a pistol in Homewood. During the stop in his vehicle, he denied pointing a gun at anyone. But, according to an affidavit, when officers asked him what was in the dashboard compartment of his vehicle, he ran away. Police found a gun in the compartment and prepared a warrant on charges of carrying a gun without a permit, possession of a gun with identification marks removed and escape. They subsequently arrested him.
A jury acquitted Mr. Wilson in October of starting the gunfight that led to the killing of Kholen Germany in Wilkinsburg on April 18, 2008.
