As energy companies knock on their door to harvest natural gas from Marcellus shale formations deep within its borders, Collier officials are offering an informational workshop, "Natural Gas Exploration", at 7 tonight in the township municipal building, 2418 Hilltop Road.
Speakers will include representatives from the Pennsylvania State Cooperative Extension and the state Department of Environmental Protection, who will explain what happens to land when it is drilled. They will address community, economic and environmental issues related to Marcellus shale exploration.
With a large portion of its 13-square miles of land undeveloped, energy companies wanting to make deals to drill for natural gas have approached the township and individual residents. However, township officials have been cautious about granting permission. In August, they sent a proposed ordinance on oil and gas drilling back to the planning commission for further review.
Energy company representatives must have solicitation permits from township police to canvass in the community.
For more information, or to register to attend the workshop, contact Bob Caun, Collier Township Codes and Zoning Officer, at 412-279-9998.
