Oakdale council voted 5-0 last night to raise the Local Services Tax on workers from $10 to $52, the maximum state law allows.
Beginning in January, the annual tax will apply to people who are employed within the borough and earn more than $12,000 a year.
Councilman Russ Campbell estimated the increase will generate about $6,000 more for next year's budget.
"We held out [for a few years], but money's tight," Mr. Campbell said of the increase. "We're finally at the point where the cost of everything is going up."
Oakdale's property tax rate also will rise next year, but council has not yet determined by how many mills.
"It won't be any higher than it has to be," Councilman Keith Merlino said.
