Investigators think burglars cut hole in roof of Hempfield bank

Investigators suspect burglars recently cut a hole in the roof of a Westmoreland County bank with the intention of stealing money.

Nothing was reported taken from the First Niagara Bank on East Pittsburgh Street in Hempfield, state police said

, and there is no evidence the suspects ever used the cut to enter the building.

The hole recently was discovered after bank employees noticed a water leak.

A contractor informed bank operators that a hole was cut.

"It looks like somebody tried to gain entry, but all they did was cause damage to the roof," said Greensburg state police Trooper Stephen J. Limani.

Damage is estimated at $3,000.
