Water was shut off to 20 delinquent customers in Carnegie on Tuesday -- the day after the deadline to pay delinquent sewer bills in full or set up a plan to pay off the bills in four months.
The borough provided names and account numbers to Pennsylvania American Water Co., which performed the shutoff duties, said Carnegie Manager Whitney Brady.
"We started with the highest balances," Ms. Brady said.
Three of those customers paid their bills in full yesterday so that their water service could be restored. A fourth person with a medical excuse set up a plan to make payments.
Though the payment deadline was Monday, municipal officials were especially busy Tuesday with people coming in to make payments, she said. The borough collected $18,000 on Monday.
Yesterday, 10 customers settled their accounts before they were shut off.
Though the deadline has passed, the borough will continue to accept payments on delinquent accounts, she said.
A total of 872 accounts had been identified as delinquent, with $350,000 owed from 200 of those accounts.
Prior to yesterday, a total of 72 accounts had been paid in full. Another 50 to 60 people have made arrangements to make monthly catch-up payments. Those who are making agreed-upon installment payments will not have their water shut off.
