Vote set tonight on grocery's plans in Cranberry
Thursday, November 05, 2009

Concerns of a dozen or more neighbors of a new grocery on Freedom Road appeared to be at least partially allayed during a public hearing last week, just in time for Cranberry supervisors to vote tonight on whether to allow the plans to move forward.

Randy Morris, representing Sorbara & Sons, of Bridgeville, said the Shop 'N Save won't sit as high or emit as much light as residents feared.

One of those residents, Dan Page, said following the public hearing he feels "a lot better about it now. I'd prefer it not go in but I know that I don't have the right to make that happen. But, a lot of concerns have been addressed."

Sorbara & Sons wants to build a 64,723-square-foot grocery in Freedom Square.

Some of the concerns that have been raised during the approval process have dealt with the elevation of the store, the windows around the building, the signage and the traffic.

Mr. Morris testified that the elevation will be lower than it may have appeared -- "We're moving a lot of earth out of there," he said. He also said that windows shown on conceptual drawings actually are "faux" windows installed for aesthetic purposes and don't emit any light.

Planning Director Ron Henshaw also testified that Sorbara & Sons has agreed to boost its landscaping buffer and also will pay about $1 million toward transportation improvements to mitigate the traffic that will result from the development.

Tonight's meeting will begin at 6:30 p.m. in the Rochester Road municipal center.
