Conductor Leonard Slatkin, 65, was hospitalized in Rotterdam on Sunday after complaining of chest discomfort following a concert with the Rotterdam Philharmonic.

The Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra's principal guest conductor underwent successful coronary procedures and had stents placed in an artery, said his manager R. Douglas Sheldon of Columbia Artist Management Inc.

"He sounded strong, chipper and healthy," Mr. Sheldon said. "We are hoping that he will be conducting soon."

Slatkin will remain in the hospital for several days before returning to the United States.

The conductor will withdraw from concerts in Prague this week and with the PSO at West Virginia University Tuesday in Morgantown. Resident conductor Lawrence Loh will now lead the orchestra.

Mr. Slatkin's next scheduled appearance at Heinz Hall is Feb. 19. Sheldon hopes he will be on the podium again much sooner, starting in Detroit, where he is music director of the Detroit Symphony Orchestra.

"He is scheduled there the last two weeks of November, and we will have those concerts as a goal."
