Football Roundup: S.S. Beaver claims final Big Seven spot
Rams' win bumps W. Beaver, Shenango
Sunday, November 01, 2009

Most WPIAL teams knew whether they made or missed the playoffs by yesterday morning, but the Class A Big Seven Conference playoff picture was still a bit cloudy.

Three teams -- South Side Beaver, Western Beaver and Shenango -- could have clinched the fourth and final spot yesterday depending on the outcome of a couple of games.

But South Side Beaver knew what it had to do: win, and the Rams are in the postseason.

The Rams (6-3, 4-3) beat conference and county rival Western Beaver (2-7, 2-5), 16-6, yesterday at Western Beaver's Rich Neidbala Field.

The Rams' victory was the second consecutive against the Golden Beavers.

With the win, South Side Beaver clinched its second consecutive playoff berth in the Big Seven Conference, where it joins Rochester, Laurel and Monaca.

Quarterback Luke Shaffer led the way for the Rams, scoring two touchdowns -- one passing and one rushing. He finished with 107 yards rushing on 14 carries.

Had Western Beaver won, it still needed Shenango to lose later last night in order to advance.

If the Golden Beavers and Shenango had won, the Wildcats would have advanced to the postseason.

Other games

• Freeport 35, Summit Academy 6: This victory gave the Yellowjackets (8-1) a share of the Class AA Allegheny Conference title. But since their only loss was to co-champion Shady Side Academy (8-1), Freeport will be seeded as the second-place finisher from the conference. Summit Academy finished 2-7, in eighth place.

• Erie McDowell 65, Connellsville 7: The Trojans (7-2) crushed the Falcons (0-9, 0-6) in a non-conference Class AAAA matchup yesterday in Erie.

McDowell scored more than 30 points for the seventh time this season while Connellsville allowed more than 30 points for the eighth time this season.

The Trojans finished 7-2 against WPIAL foes.

• Leechburg 22, Wilkinsburg 0: The Blue Devils denied the Tigers their 500th win in school history with a dominating defensive performance in Class A Eastern Conference play.

Quarterback D.J. Oberdorf threw one touchdown and ran for another in the first win of the season for Leechburg (1-8).

Wilkinsburg (0-9) has not won a game since beating Leechburg a year ago at the end of the season. The Tigers have a 1-26 record the past three seasons.

• Westinghouse 13, Allderdice 0: Two second-quarter touchdowns separated the Bulldogs (3-5) and Dragons (1-7).

Westinghouse had 230 yards rushing and 4 yards passing in a City League victory at Cupples Stadium.

Westinghouse had six fumbles and was penalized nine times in the win. Allderdice fumbled just once and had one penalty for 5 yards.

• Western Reserve Academy 20, Kiski School 2: A second-quarter safety was the lone score for the Knights (2-6) in an interstate game.

Michael Gulasey threw a touchdown pass and ran for another for Ohio's Western Reserve (3-6).
