It's the haunting season and please be careful out there.
Double-check the official trick-or-treat times for your community this Halloween weekend by going to www.post-gazette.com and typing "trick-or-treat" into the search box.
And while you are putting out (and munching on) those chocolate bars and other goodies, remember to turn on the porch light so the little goblins at your door stay safe.
A safe Hallween is a boo-ti-ful thing.
You can, indeed, party hardy at Saturday's Halloween parties because you can rely on an extra hour's sleep. Sunday morning at 2 is the time we "fall back" into Eastern Standard Time, so remember to set your clocks back one hour and nestle back into that pillow. Yawn.
The polls will be open from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. Tuesday for the general election.
After you vote, you can find Allegheny County results online Tuesday night at www.post-gazette.com and in print Wednesday in the Post-Gazette.
And we'll have Washington County vote totals next Thursday in South.
It's also fall and a young buck's thoughts turn to ... .
Deer movement increases during the fall breeding season, making it all the more important for motorists to stay alert, especially at dawn and dusk, to reduce the risk of striking a deer, reminds PennDOT Secretary Allen D. Biehler.
Deer become bolder and travel greater distances during their breeding season; they are most active between sunset and sunrise.
PennDOT statistics show 46 percent of all crashes involving deer occurred in the months of October and November. More than 78 percent of the crashes in the past five years involving deer occurred between 5 p.m. and 6 a.m. Last year, there were 2,797 such crashes statewide, resulting in 636 injuries and 11 fatalities.
By following a few safety tips, you can be safer:
Be especially watchful during morning and evening hours.
Watch out for hunters.
Wear reflective clothing and carry a flashlight.
Educate young drivers.
Slow down where deer crossing signs are posted and increase following distance between vehicles.
If a dead deer presents an obvious safety hazard on state roads, motorists should call 1-800-FIX-ROAD.
