Two large, privately owned properties are the newest locations being considered for a proposed Norwin regional community recreation center.
The 25-acre Weber Estate on Colonial Manor Road, just south of Route 30, and the 20-acre Skinner property, on Lincoln Way across from the Redstone Highlands retirement and personal care complex, were identified Monday night.
North Huntingdon officials recommended the sites for inclusion in a feasibility study of potential locations being performed by Environmental Production and Design.
The Norwin Regional Community Recreation Center Committee also is considering a 10- to 14-acre parcel of the former Carradam Golf Club and a section of the old Maple drive-in movie theater site off Route 30, which also houses the North Huntingdon public works complex.
Carradam and a 20-acre section of the old drive-in site were included in a previous feasibility study by the consultant.
A location within the 80-acre, township-owned former drive-in property is preferred, but the study indicated that a proposed 90,000-square-foot community center would not fit without the 20-acre parcel being added.
EPD expanded the study of the drive-in property to 15 wooded hilly acres that have never been used. That section can be accessed from Skellytown Road.
A center building alone would cover 2 acres.
"With the township's help, the committee now has four quality sites to consider," said committee chairman John Bales.
"The community center project is moving forward. But there's still a long way to go."
Results of a survey of 3,000 randomly selected residents of the Norwin School District will be revealed at a public meeting at 6 p.m. Nov. 23 in the Commissioners Chamber in the Town House. The committee will seek public input on the project.
