PG East: Centurions eager for volleyball playoffs
Thursday, October 29, 2009

Greensburg Central Catholic High School girls' volleyball coach Heather Meyers is hoping for a rematch with West Shamokin in the WPIAL Class A playoffs.

The two teams faced off in Section 1-AA twice during the regular season and each won on its home court.

"We beat West Shamokin, 3-1, in the first half [of section play] and were swept, 3-0, in the second half," Meyers said. "It would be great to face them again, but we can't be concerned with that now. Both of us would have to win three matches for that to happen."

The WPIAL Volleyball Steering Committee tabbed West Shamokin [the merger of West Shamokin and Elderton] as the No. 1 seed in the 19-team Class A bracket and Greensburg Central is the No. 2 seed.

"West Shamokin won the first game of our match at home, but we won the next three games," Meyers said. "In the second half, West Shamokin looked like a totally different team. They deserve to be the No. 1 seed."

Both teams open the playoffs tonight. Greensburg Central will face Northgate at Pine-Richland High School at 6 p.m. West Shamokin will play Leechburg at Indiana High School at 6 p.m.

"I haven't seen many of the other seeded teams, but from what I hear, everybody believes that we deserve to be the No. 2 seed," said Meyers, when asked if her squad was worthy of its high seeding.

The main reason Greensburg Central was seeded No. 2 is its success in regular-season tournaments.

"We won the Derry tournament and beat Latrobe [the No. 6 seed in Class AAA] in the title match," Meyers said. "We also beat Penn Hills [the No. 7 seed in Class AAA] in the quarterfinals and Indiana [the No. 3 seed in Class AA] in the semifinals."

Greensburg Central Catholic also won the Westmoreland County Coaches Association Tournament title and advanced to the playoff round at the Butler tournament.

"Our goal is to win a WPIAL title," said Meyers, who led the Centurions to the WPIAL title match in 2007, her first season as head coach. "We came close two years ago, but came up short."

Class AAA wide open

The Class AAA bracket features five teams from the East suburban area, including Section 1-AAA champion Greater Latrobe and Section 4-AAA champion Penn Hills. Penn-Trafford, Franklin Regional and Plum also qualified for the 15-team bracket.

Latrobe, the No. 6 seed, played host to Plum, the third-place finisher in Section 4-AAA, in the first round last night.

"We deserve to be seeded among the top five," said Latrobe coach Jenny Feiertag, prior to the pairings meeting. "We were not seeded as high as I thought we should have been last year either. We just have to go out and prove it on the court. We have to beat a team seeded above us to get some recognition."

Penn Hills, the No. 7 seed, played host to Baldwin, the third-place finisher in Section 5-AAA, in the first round last night.

"It's been a while since Penn Hills hosted a WPIAL playoff match," Penn Hills coach Jay Mitlo said. "It's also been a long time since we won a section title. I'm pretty sure the last Penn Hills team to win a section title was in 1999.

"Our goal was to win a section title and we're elated to reach that goal. We're also very excited to be in the playoffs. This group is as good as I've ever had. The girls put in a lot of time during the summer doing whole body workouts. We're in the greatest shape we've ever been in."
