Where to go ... Deer Lakes Park
Sunday, October 25, 2009

What to do: When municipal planners looked at the Russellton-Culmerville-Curtisville area near Tarentum, they decided what the place really needed was a good place to go fishing. Two small spring-fed lakes were installed near an existing impoundment on 1,180 acres in Frazer and West Deer townships. Stocked with bluegill, crappies, perch, sunfish, trout, catfish and bass, Deer Lakes Park is custom-made for family fishing trips, but the centerpiece of the park is worlds away from the water. Wagman Observatory, run by the Amateur Astronomers Association of Pittsburgh, includes a giant telescope that provides spectacular views of the moon, solar system and beyond during frequent nighttime Star Parties. Other features of the park include a disc golf course, playground, groves, shelters, picnic areas and walking and running trails.
