Lake Erie: Low, clear conditions prevailed on tributaries this week and steelhead were spread out. A calm lake Wednesday made for favorable shoreline fishing, but that was expected to change with high winds out of the northeast forecast for today. A half-inch of rain also was predicted for last night and today. Orlo Pletcher 13, of Somerset caught an 11-pound 2-ounce, 29-inch walleye with 18-inch girth on a minnow on Walnut Creek.
Allegheny River, Allegheny Reservoir (Warren County): The river from the tailwaters and downstream was yielding numbers of walleyes and releases of big brown trout. Smallmouth bass, northern pike and a couple of small muskies also were reported. In the reservoir, Sugar and Willow bays and Roper Hollow were producing walleyes in 35 feet and bass in 20 feet. Water levels were being lowered to winter pool.
Allegheny River (Venango County): Don Glasgow of Butler caught a 10-pound 12-ounce 30-inch walleye this week.
Pymatuning Reservoir (Crawford County): Numbers of nice perch were reported, especially near the dam. Some anglers also were catching walleyes.
Lake Wilhelm (Mercer County): Shore anglers were catching numbers of crappies averaging 9 and 10 inches this week. The Sheakleyville Bridge area got a lot of pressure in recent days.
Lake Arthur (Butler County): Mild temperatures caused a spike in angling action midweek. Wes Passarelli of Saxonburg and a friend caught 25 crappies, including many 1-pounders and a 2 1/2-pounder that measured 16 inches. Michael Hills won the Moraine Musky Association tournament Saturday with a 44-inch muskie. Don Kriley was second with a 41-incher and Edie Buss was third with a 40-incher. Bass, walleyes and channel catfish were reported.
Allegheny River: Walleyes and saugers were caught from shore and boat at the dams and mouths of creeks on fathead minnows. One angler landed a 28-inch walleye at Lock 3 Tuesday morning.
Ohio River: Anglers were releasing nice-size walleyes in the back channel dam, but action was inconsistent.
Montour Run: This Ohio River tributary was fishing well for recently stocked trout in recent days.
Marshall Lake (Allegheny County): Largemouth bass, catfish and other fish salvaged from North Park Lake have been moved to this smaller impoundment in North Park.
Indian Lake (Somerset County): This 750-acre lake was fishing well for stocked trout on Powerbait and waxworms.
High Point Lake (Somerset County): Anglers were catching northern pike and bass in recent days.
Loyalhanna Creek (Westmoreland County): White Rooster Tails were productive, with anglers catching nice-size trout.
Dunlap, Virgin Run (Fayette County): Anglers were catching trout on Powerbait and Minnie Foo jigs tipped with waxworms.
Youghiogheny River: Good conditions and nice catches of trout were reported on the river and its tributaries, with Blue-Winged Olives the dominant hatch, expected to continue through winter. A few tan caddisflies also were spotted.
Raystown Lake (Huntingdon County): Lake trout, including a 14-pounder, were caught on spoons in 30 to 40 feet in recent days. Striped bass in mixed sizes were hitting on live bait fished by anglers trolling off planer boards and bobbers in 15 to 25 feet. Water was clear with a surface temperature of 55 degrees yesterday at 11a.m.
Pine Creek, Little Pine Creek (Lycoming County): Good weather and stream conditions and active trout were reported as of yesterday. Glen McConnell of Waterville caught trout on pink plastic eggs in the Delayed Harvest Artificial Lures Only section of Little Pine Wednesday evening. Hunting season has taken angling pressure off the streams. Rainfall forecast for yesterday and today was expected to raise water levels. Some top water action was reported on Slate Drakes and Blue-Winged Olives; Wooly Buggers and streamers also were working well.
Spring Creek (Centre County): Good fall levels were reported in recent days. A few tan and green caddisflies, midges, Blue-Winged Olives (sizes 20-22) and craneflies were hatching. Nymphing with small flies (18-22) and throwing medium-size streamers were more productive than top water presentations.
Deep Creek Lake (Maryland): Perch were hitting in recent days.
