After losing its first six games of the season, Robert Morris figured out how to get into the victory column: Don't let the other team score.
The Colonials' defense pitched its first shutout since 2006 yesterday at Joe Walton Stadium in Moon, defeating Saint Francis, Pa., 28-0, in a Northeast Conference contest.
Robert Morris (1-6, 1-3 NEC) limited the Red Flash (1-6, 0-4) to 42 yards of offense in the second half and 173 overall. Saint Francis managed 99 yards rushing on 35 attempts. The Colonials also intercepted two passes, and Rolf Bathold returned one 25 yards for a touchdown in the third quarter.
The Colonials' defense also set up the final score of the game. Linebacker Alex DiMichele intercepted a pass that was tipped by teammate Chris Roberts and ran 10 yards to the Saint Francis 1. Jamar Cromwell scored on the next play.
Central Connecticut State 31, Duquesne 24: Quarterback Hunter Wanket passed for a career-high 233 yards and three second-half scores as the Blue Devils (5-1, 3-0) won at Duquesne (2-5, 1-3) in the NEC. Sean Patterson started at quarterback for the Dukes and threw for 187 yards and two touchdowns.
Clarion 29, Mercyhurst 25: The Golden Eagles (5-3, 4-1 Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference West) scored 22 points in the fourth quarter for the win. Quarterback Tyler Huether completed 20 of 33 passes for 283 yards and two scores.
Gannon 51, Slippery Rock 48: Gannon (3-5, 1-4) rolled up 558 yards total offense in the home PSAC West win against the Rock (5-3, 2-3).
IUP 45, Lock Haven 0: IUP (4-4, 1-4) snapped a four-game losing streak with the road win. The Crimson Hawks limited Lock Haven (0-7, 0-5) to 1 yard of total offense.
Washington & Jefferson 21, Saint Vincent 7: Gino Rometo completed 14 of 25 passes for 156 yards and a score as W&J (6-0, 2-0 Presidents' Athletic Conference) won at Saint Vincent (0-7).
Westminster 31, Bethany 28: The Titans (3-4, 2-2 PAC) won consecutive conference games for the first time since 2003. Shawn Lehockey started at quarterback for the first time, running for 98 yards on 16 carries and passing for another 47.
Geneva 49, Waynesburg 39: Gerard Muschette rushed for 136 yards and two scores as Geneva (5-1) won a PAC road game. Bill Becker had 129 yards rushing and three touchdowns for Waynesburg (3-3).
Concord 52, Seton Hill 34: Quarterback D.J. Lenehan completed 37 of 66 passes for 462 yards and four scores, but it wasn't enough as the Griffins (1-7, 0-6 West Virginia Intercollegiate Athletic Conference) lost at Concord (5-3, 3-3).
