New parklet celebrates Fred Rogers
Sunday, October 18, 2009

Can you say "greenspace?"

A bronze sculpture of Fred Rogers, Pittsburgh's noted educator, minister and host of the long-running children's show "Mister Rogers' Neighborhood," will be the centerpiece of a new commemorative parklet located in North Shore Riverfront Park.

Tribute to Children, located on a section of the existing park near Heinz Field, will be rededicated next month.

The parklet will include an upgrade of an existing bridge pier, the Rogers statue and landscaping, and offer vistas of Downtown, Point State Park and views of The Point and the Allegheny and Ohio rivers. From the park, patrons will enjoy views of downtown Pittsburgh, Point State Park and the three rivers.

The sculpture was commissioned by Pittsburgh philanthropist Cordelia Scaife May.

Park planners say Tribute to Children will receive full, lifetime maintenance from the Colcom Foundation, a Pittsburgh-based group environmental group.

Designed and built by Pittsburgh design firm Astorino, the monument will include the Rogers likeness sitting on a stairway in front of a large arch that patrons will be able to walk through.

"This high-profile location will provide community members a destination within the existing North Shore Riverfront Park," said landscape designer Rachelle Wolf, in a press release. "... This design-build approach has allowed our team to oversee the project start to finish, from the creative conception through landscaping and construction."

Tribute to Children will join a landscape dominated by the Carnegie Science Center, Heinz Field and the walkway on the Allegheny River waterfront.
