Power restored in city; winds damage Penn State scoreboard
Wednesday, October 07, 2009

Just as Duquesne Light was announcing that all power had been restored to Pittsburgh-area neighborhoods buffeted by this morning's high winds, Penn State was announcing that gusts had damaged the scoreboard at its football stadium.

That matched the path predicted by the National Weather Service, which had issued wind advisories for Western Pennsylvania through noon

and for counties farther east until at least 6 p.m.

Shortly before 2 p.m., Penn State said the winds dislodged panels from the south end scoreboard at Beaver Stadium.

At least one car in an adjacent parking lot was damaged by a falling panel, and another landed on the road.

Parts of roads around the stadium were closed.

Work was being done on the scoreboard this week, and, as part of it, panels on the roof of the scoreboard and those above the video screen were loosened for removal and replacement. Today's high winds caused some of those panels to dislodge and fly out of the stadium. Other panels that had been loosened can't be secured until the winds diminish.

"I haven't gotten any kind of indication that there was any damage to Beaver Stadium" itself, Penn State spokesman Jeff Nelson said.

No. 14 Penn State hosts Eastern Illinois Saturday at noon.

Back in the Pittsburgh area, strong wind gusts caused power outages and complicated .

The wind was blamed for electric power lines being downed across the area, including in Oakland.

Power had been interrupted for about 3,000 Duquesne Light customers, mostly in Oakland and Greenfield in the city, and in the South Hills in and around Bethel Park, a company spokesman said.

Just before 2 p.m., the company announced all power had been restores.
