We just wouldn't buy any more produce from Giant Eagle even if they lower the prices ("Giant Eagle Finds Some Wiggle Room To Cut Prices, Sept. 29).
Not only is the produce overpriced, but it doesn't keep more than a couple of days in the refrigerator. I don't know where they buy their produce, but the tomatoes go bad seemingly overnight. The lettuce turns brown in a few days.
We are faithful Giant Eagle shoppers otherwise and take full advantage of their loyalty card and double coupons usually saving $35 on a $150 grocery order. We also get cents off for gasoline and 1 percent off our grocery order per 10 gallons at GetGo.
We buy our produce from the guy at the flea market on Greensburg Pike across from Wal-Mart in North Versailles. It is very fresh, and keeps a long time. We also buy from the fruit stand on Route 30 during the summer and fall. Our local corn comes from the Denney Farms wagon that parks at the fire department in North Huntington.
I read your article concerning Giant Eagle lowering prices with interest. My personal experience with has been that it's a "shell game." They make a big deal about how they have lowered prices but they just raise other prices and hope that you don't notice.
Recently, I purchased two bags of Krunchers potato chips at Giant Eagle for an upcoming party. Imagine my surprise at the register when the full price that the manufacturer prints on the bags was charged. The last time I bought chips the price was 10 percent less than the pre-printed tag. So my $3.49 each bag was $3.49 not $3.15. Also, I noticed that in the bakery specialty breads are now weighed so that the bread that was $4.50 a loaf is now $4.50 a pound.
If you know your produce prices you will be shocked at how much higher Giant Eagle is than the competition. Again, I would rather not have double coupons, gas perks, etc., just give me a lower total bill.
Like so many other people, I have discovered Aldi's where I do the majority of my grocery shopping. Their quality and low prices are authentic, not a marketing gimmick.
