The Fumbler: Look! No hands on picks
Friday, October 02, 2009

The Fumbler certainly has a story to tell.

First, let it be known The Fumbler puts a friendly wager on the Steelers' game each week with a neighbor. The Fumbler takes the Steelers, his neighbor takes the opponent -- and the loser has to wash the winner's car.

Obviously, The Fumbler lost this past weekend, and he was miserable. He also was out of sponges, so he went to Giant Eagle Tuesday night.

The Fumbler got what he needed and was walking back to his car (which will remain dirty at least another week) and saw this tall, lanky, athletic-looking fellow trying to carry six shopping bags. The guy was having a really tough time. The guy looked up in the middle of the parking lot at The Fumbler and said, sheepishly, "Hey, I sure could use a hand." The Fumbler recognized him immediately as Limas Sweed. The Fumbler looked at him in disgust and just said, "A hand? You could use two hands!" and walked away. After all, Sweed was the reason The Fumbler was in that mess.

The Fumbler didn't exactly make a mess of his picks last week, as he was 51-14 (.785 percentage). His season record is 214-51. (.807 pct.).

Here are his thoughts on this weekend's top games:

Central Catholic (3-1 overall, 0-0 conference) at Woodland Hills (3-1, 0-0), 7 p.m. today -- Running backs Damion Jones-Moore (Central Catholic) and Dom Timbers (Woodland Hills) will be the focal points of this game. But quarterback play will be the difference. Winner: Central Catholic.

Laurel (4-0, 2-0) at Rochester (4-0, 2-0), 7:30 p.m. today -- The Fumbler will be in attendance at this game, but not until he stops at the Hilltop restaurant in Rochester for one of the best steak salads anywhere. As for Rochester, the Rams feed on opposing offenses. They have allowed only 14 points. Winner: Rochester.

Uniontown (3-1, 2-0) at Greensburg Salem (3-1, 1-0), 7:30 p.m. today -- The Fumbler believes the winner will end up as Keystone Conference champions. Could one of these teams also go on to give the Keystone Conference its first WPIAL playoff win since 2000? No. Winner: Uniontown.

West Allegheny (3-1, 2-0) at New Castle (3-1, 1-1), 7:30 p.m. today -- Even though New Castle lost last week to Hopewell, The Fumbler still loves New Castle's offense. The key to this game, though, will be how well New Castle's defense does against the run. Winner: New Castle.

Freeport (3-1, 3-1) at Ford City (4-0, 4-0), 7:30 p.m. today -- Freeport opened eyes with a victory last week at home against Burrell. Winning at Ford City won't be as easy. Winner: Ford City.

Clairton (3-1, 2-0) at Fort Cherry (4-0, 2-0), 7:30 p.m. today -- Clairton has righted the ship since its season-opening loss to Laurel. Winner: Clairton.
