Chartiers Valley teams are Orange Bowl-bound
Squads will perform in Miami at halftime show, learn from pro dancers
Thursday, August 27, 2009

Chartiers Valley's Charvalettes and majorettes are hard at work, practicing a new dance routine that will take them from their high school football field in Collier to Land Shark Stadium in Miami, Fla.

They will be among 150 performers from across the country to take the stage Jan. 5 with the Doobie Brothers rock group for the nationally televised halftime show at the FedEx Orange Bowl.

In addition to the prime time performance at the college football game, the girls will take two days of master classes from professional choreographers, including Shane Sparks and Mandy Moore of Fox Broadcasting's "So You Think You Can Dance" television show.

"It's an honor," said Cathy Jenkins, Char Valley dance teacher and sponsor of the Charvalettes, which is a dance and drill team, and the majorettes. "The girls are real excited."

The Charvalettes and majorettes were contacted about appearing at a bowl game after they performed in 2008 at the National Cherry Blossom Festival in Washington, D.C., said Ms. Jenkins, a 13-year district dance teacher who is beginning her third season as Charvalette/majorette director.

The Charvalettes also have performed at Disney World, Universal Studios, a Pittsburgh Steelers halftime show and the New York Veterans' Day Parade, where they won a first-place award. The girls have won Gene Kelly awards and nominations, too.

Ms. Jenkins said the group has received the music DVD and choreography for the halftime show for practice. They will wear costumes provided by Orange Bowl organizers.

The Charvalette is a jazz, pom pom, dance and drill team that specializes in kick lines and precision dance, while the majorettes specialize in twirling batons. Many of the girls are on both the dance/drill team and the majorettes. Twenty-five girls make up the Charvalettes and eight more are majorettes.

Besides Ms. Jenkins and her two assistants, the girls will be accompanied by 13 parents, four of whom will be staying with them at a hotel.

The cost is $999 per person plus airfare.

"It's pretty much coming out of [the girls'] pants pockets," said Ms. Jenkins, noting six of the eligible performers will not be going for that reason.

To raise money for the trip, the group has held car washes and is selling $10 value cards for local restaurants. On Oct. 18, a spaghetti dinner fundraiser will be held at the Bridgeville Fire Hall, where an iPod Touch, donated by Orange Bowl organizers, will be raffled.

On Oct. 13, Max & Erma's in the Manor Oak Shops will donate 20 percent of restaurant tabs from patrons who bring in special fliers available at the high school office.

The young performers are seeking corporate donations, too.
