SENATE

The U.S. Senate voted 60-37 Thursday in favor of H.R. 3435, which provides an additional $2 billion in funding to the Cash for Clunkers car recycling program. Sens Robert Byrd, D-W.Va., Edward Kennedy, D-Mass., and Barbara Mikulski, D-Md., were absent. The House previously approved the program.

In a 68-31 vote Thursday, the Senate also confirmed Sonia Sotomayor as the nation's first Hispanic Supreme Court justice. Sen. Edward Kennedy, D-Mass., was absent.

PA. LEGISLATURE

HOUSE

The state House voted 194-4 last week in favor of Senate Bill 850, a bill enacted first by Senate Republicans, which creates a $27.1 billion state budget, most of which Gov. Ed Rendell has said he will veto. But he will sign the parts of the bill that allow 77,000 state workers to be paid for work they've done since the fiscal year started July 1.
